Freedom of Speach is a touchy subject because we are told from a very young age that we are lucky to live in a country in which we can express ourselves through our words and not be penalized for it. As we grow older we find ourselves in trouble for that same thing, saying something and getting in trouble. So is there really freedom of speach here in the U.S., or should it not be called free speach seeing as it has its' boundries.
There are many ways in which you can now get in trouble for what you say. School is one of those things that will bring you down. Today schools penalize students on a weekly basis because of things they say that are considered "inappropiate". Though it is "inappropriate" we have the rite to say it because our constitution says we have freedom of speech, or so we thought. Schools can now decide what should not be said, in or out of school. I don't think that it is rite that a school can penalize a student for things said online. especially seeing as schools have most websites blocked that these things would be said on, so its not like students could access the writing from the school. I think that if there is a problem, or hate crime commited online outside of school, that outside sources sucj as the police should handle it and that it should not be up to the school to condem the students. I do think though that if there is a prolem between two students and there has been threatening etc. online that the school so be told about it by the police and have to make sure that these students don't see eachother during the day and that what occured online doesn't happen in school. Schools should be a safe haven for kids, but it is not their job to punish students for what happens out of school, it is their job to make sure that it doesn't happen in school and if it does then to punish for that.
